7 PhD positions in active modes at TU Delft

Civil Engineering and Geosciences

The Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences of Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) provides leading international research and education, with innovation and sustainability as central themes. Research and education are closely interwoven and address societal challenges. The Faculty consists of the departments of Transport and Planning, Structural Engineering, Geoscience and Engineering, Water Management, Hydraulic Engineering, and Geoscience and Remote Sensing.

The Department of Transport and Planning consists of ± 80 employees doing research and education in the areas of planning, design, operations and management of traffic and transport systems. The main research areas are transport systems, design of intermodal transport net works, traffic management and traffic flow theory.

Job description

The Transport & Planning Department of the Delft University of Technology is starting a new research programme on urban Active Mode Mobility. The programme focuses on the various aspects of pedestrian and cycle traffic and transportation operations. The programme aims to develop and empirically underpin comprehensive behavioural theories and conceptual and mathematical models to explain and predict the dynamics of pedestrians, cyclists, a nd mixed flows at all relevant behavioural levels. This will incude acquiring spatial knowledge, activity scheduling, route choice and operations within an urban context, with a special focus on the role of ICT on learning and choice behaviour.
The programme consists of eleven projects (8 PhD, 7 of which are vacant, and 3 post-docs) and will be conducted in close collaboration with the city of Amsterdam under the umbrella of the newAmsterdam Institute of Advanced Metropolitan Solutions (AMS).

Due to the close connection of the programme with AMS and the city of Amsterdam, you will spend 1 - 2 days per week at the AMS Institute in Amsterdam.

The seven projects are briefly as follows:
L2: Retrieving information about crowdedness from social media
T1.1: Understanding and modelling walking and cycling behaviour
T1.2: Developing macroscopic flow models for pedestrian, bicycle and mixed flows
T2.1: Developing an activity-based choice theory
T2.2: Establishing which factors determine the route choice and active choices in a city in relation to trip purpose, based on empirical data
E1: Methodology development for crowd/cyclist management and control
E2: Adaptive planning and organisation, risk assessment

Requirements

We are looking for highly talented and motivated PhD students with an MSc degree in an appropriate field. Good English skills (speaking are writing) is required, as are strong analytical skills and project management skills. As the projects are part of a large research program, we seek for opportunities for the PhD students to cooperate on various topics. Affinity for working in a group is therefore preferred.
