Professor in the field of climate, energy and environmental efficiency of transport systems

The Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute (VTI), is an assignment-based authority with about 200 employees and an annual turnover of approximately SEK 195 million. VTI and Linköping University hereby announce a professorship in the field of climate, energy and environmental efficiency of transport systems.

The position is located at VTI’s main office in Linköping, Sweden, in the Department of society, environment and transport.

Research focus

The main area of research will be the analysis and assessment of the impact of transport systems on the environment, with a clear systems perspective and focus on the complexity within the design, planning and governance of sustainable transport systems. The analysis of environmental effects such as exhaust, particle and greenhouse gas emissions, as well as noise pollution and energy consumption are prioritized. The research area is by nature contained within the engineering and natural sciences and has a focus on model development, tools and methods for definitions, assessment, analysis and governance of the transport system and its environmental impact. The development of cause and effect relationships for the evaluation of different measures is also included in the research area.

As a Professor at VTI you will be expected to take up the following duties:

·     Lead, encourage and conduct research in order to increase the knowledge, competence and understanding of the area.

·     Develop and strengthen VTI’s networks within the area.

·     Supervise doctoral students affiliated with VTI and Linköping University.

·     Through supervision, seminars, conferences and lectures disseminate knowledge from the area.

·     Initiate, prepare, promote and steer projects within the area towards cooperation with universities, industry,
organisations and Governmental agencies.

·     Strengthen international cooperation within the field, as well as initiate new contacts.

 Qualifications

In order to be qualified for the appointment as Professor the applicant is required to prove pedagogical skills, and must be admitted as docent or have the corresponding scientific proficiency or other professional qualifications that are of importance with reference to the subject and the duties of the appointment.

Assessment criteria

The successful candidate will have documented scientific and pedagogical competencies within the area, as well as strong leadership skills. Along with documented competence and experience of independently conducting and leading research, the applicant is also expected to have experience from prominent international research within the field of climate, energy and environmental efficiency of transport systems, preferably with a multi-disciplinary perspective. The applicant should also be able to show a potential for developing prominent research programs.

An ability to create relevant networks and to initiate and lead national as well as international projects, will be given great weight, as well as the ability to create research programs in cooperation with research funding agencies and other important stakeholders in the transport sector. Furthermore, the ability to disseminate knowledge and to interact with the rest of the society, will also be considered.
