LEADERSHIP CHAIR IN FUTURE MOBILITY UNIVERSITY OF LEEDS, Faculty of Environment, Institute for Transport Studies

Oil price rises, climate change and a period of sustained economic austerity are all major changes to the external environment in which we plan for the future of mobility. Simultaneously, new technologies both inside and outside of transport may present the prospect for radical changes in the demand for and nature of mobility and in turn the use of our transportation systems. This post is intended to be an important catalyst for helping define and progress creative and challenging new research agendas and in turn delivering research findings that are academically leading and policy relevant. The appointee will lead an innovative programme of research examining the relationships between technological change, social change and changing mobility.

The post will be of strategic importance to the future shaping of the Institute for Transport Studies (ITS) and its sustained reputation for excellence. It is intended to make a significant contribution to leadership within the wider enterprise of transport and mobility studies in the UK and internationally. As well as leading research, the appointee will be expected to foster collaborations within the Institute for Transport Studies and across the University of Leeds.

The post is an opportunity to further strengthen the relationships between academia, government and industry in a collaborative approach to dealing with such uncertainty. It is anticipated that the appointee will develop a portfolio of research which cuts across the interests of RCUK, UK Government, the EU and will also attract industrial funding. The role will also help to define and deliver enhancements to our leading taught programmes, responding to the future skills needs of the sector.
